‘Holding back the tears’

Dr Samson-Brogan

A BCLA webinar on 18 February aims to give eyecare clinicians a blueprint for establishing a speciality contact lens practice and helping patients with complex corneas and ocular surface diseases.

The session, titled ‘Stepping stones to speciality contact lens practice: holding back the tears’, will be delivered by former BCLA president and contact lens optician, Keith Tempany, and Dr Joserine Samson-Brogan, a specialty contact lens practitioner based in Dubai, and the BCLA’s Global Ambassador for the Middle East.

Dr Samson-Brogan said: “There has been much bandwidth in recent years around the improvement of rigid gas permeable materials, the resurgence of scleral lenses, and consequently, the fitting of lenses to complex corneas and ocular surface diseases. However, if all you have in your toolbox is a hammer, then every problem starts looking like a nail.

“This webinar aims to guide you on the stepping stones to fitting these miraculous little pieces of plastic. From the basics of understanding how different corneal shapes impact vision to discussing how different types of speciality contact lenses are utilised as a modality to restore functional vision, we will look at how you can enable your patients with scarred and complex corneas to have a better quality of life by significantly improving their vision.”

Keith Tempany

Key takeaways for delegates will include tips on using corneal topography to decide the best contact lens design for the patient, understanding what the best contact lens options are for different corneal complexities, and acknowledging how a damaged ocular surface can affect vision, helping clinicians to be more empathetic with patients.

Keith Tempany has specialised in irregular corneas, RGPs, multifocals and orthokeratology for more than 20 years.

He added: “Whether you are a novice, an expert, stuck on a certain case, or concerned at being a one-trick pony, join us as we explore how to change people’s lives through speciality contact lenses and make miracles happen.”

The webinar is worth one CPD point and is open to all. It will be held from 7pm to 8pm on Tuesday 18 February.
